Chapter 17 - GENETIC TRUTH

Three days later, I sat in a private, sunlit recovery suite overlooking Central Park, holding Liam in my arms as he slept peacefully.
The door opened softly, and Marcus walked in carrying a thick stack of legal documents and a fresh bouquet of white peonies.
“How’s the newest owner of Callahan Maritime doing?” Marcus asked with a warm smile, setting the flowers on the windowsill.
“He slept four hours straight,” I smiled, looking down at Liam’s serene face. “What’s the word from the courthouse?”
Marcus pulled up a chair beside the bed. “Dominic’s bail was officially denied this morning. The judge deemed him an extreme flight risk due to his foreign accounts in Zurich. Charles Vane turned state’s evidence an hour ago to avoid prison time.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Vanessa signed a full confession regarding the altered Naples contracts,” Marcus explained. “In exchange for her cooperation, the SEC is letting her plead down to a misdemeanor. Callahan Maritime’s board of directors held an emergency vote at dawn.”
I looked at him, holding my breath. “And?”
“The board voted unanimously to strip Dominic of all executive power,” Marcus announced triumphantly. “Because your original twenty-five percent equity was restored by court order, and because you hold Liam’s inheritance trust, you are now the controlling shareholder of the firm.”
I took a deep, steady breath, feeling the heavy burden that had weighed on my chest for months finally dissolve into the quiet room.

“Dominic thought he was using me to secure his company,” I said quietly. “He ended up giving me everything.”
“He requested a meeting, Clare,” Marcus added, his tone turning serious. “His defense team wants a plea deal. He says he won't sign the corporate asset transfers unless you come to the holding facility to face him one last time.”
