Chapter 16 - SAFE HOUSE DELIVERY

|

The next six hours disappeared into a blur of sterile lights, chaotic shouting, and white hospital curtains.

Because of the extreme stress and early trauma of the past twenty-four hours, my body had gone into rapid, advanced labor at thirty-four weeks. I was rushed into the high-risk surgical suite at Mount Sinai Hospital, surrounded by an elite medical team assigned personally by Marcus to ensure Dominic’s remaining allies couldn't tamper with my care.

“Breathe, Clare! Push!” the doctor barked over the rhythmic, frantic chiming of the heart monitors.

Pain tore through my frame in relentless waves, but every time I felt like giving up, I pictured Dominic’s face in handcuffs. I pictured the quiet nursery waiting in Brooklyn.

“One more push!”

I closed my eyes, screamed through gritted teeth, and poured every ounce of my remaining life force into that final moment.

At 5:14 p.m., a sharp, loud, furious cry filled the operating room.

I collapsed back against the wet pillows, gasping for air, tears streaming down my cheeks.

“It’s a boy,” the pediatrician smiled, wrapping the tiny, squirming infant in a warm flannel blanket and laying him gently onto my bare chest.

He was small, his skin flushed pink, but his dark eyes blinked open, staring directly up into mine. His tiny fingers curled around my index finger with surprising, fierce strength.

“Is he okay?” I sobbed, kissing his soft, warm forehead. “His heart?”

The pediatric cardiologist stepped forward, holding a portable ultrasound device. “We conducted an immediate screening, Clare. He does carry the minor Callahan genetic marker, but it’s an extraordinarily mild variation. He doesn't need a Swiss clinic or surgery. He just needs a healthy, loving mother.”

I pulled my son closer to my heart, weeping tears of pure, untainted joy.

“Welcome to the world, Liam,” I whispered into his hair. “You are safe now.”
