Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room

|

Leah was admitted to a private maternity unit within the hour. The diagnosis was a devastating list of suffering: severe dehydration, acute anemia, dangerously high blood pressure, and terrifying signs of early contractions. The baby’s heartbeat remained steady, thank God, but the doctors ordered immediate, strict bed rest and close observation.

When the nurses examined her, they found dark bruising on her upper arms and shoulders, deep, infected blisters on both of her hands, and painful swelling in her feet. The coarse fabric of the old uniform had irritated her skin so badly that it caused bleeding along one side of her abdomen.

I sat frozen in a plastic chair beside the hospital bed while a gentle nurse carefully cleaned and bandaged her hands.

Every single question I desperately wanted to ask sounded like a cruel accusation against the person who had already suffered so much.

Why didn’t you tell me?

Why didn’t you just leave the house?

Why did you keep answering my text messages as though everything was perfectly normal?

The nurse finally finished her work and quietly left us alone. The rhythmic beeping of the fetal monitor was the only sound in the room.

Leah stared blankly toward the dark hospital window.

“I tried to tell you,” she whispered into the quiet room.

I felt something fundamental inside my chest collapse.

“When?” I asked, my voice cracking.

“The very first week.”

She slowly explained that immediately after I left for Singapore, Celia had moved her belongings into the estate, falsely claiming she wanted to help care for Leah during the difficult pregnancy. Vanessa and Grant quickly followed. Within days, my family began hosting lavish dinners and using the house for high-stakes business meetings. When Leah logically objected to the noise and intrusion, Celia confidently told the staff that she now held my absolute power of attorney.

When Leah tried to call me, my mother would enter the room and listen to every word. Afterward, Celia physically took Leah’s smartphone and replaced it with a restricted device connected to a shared family account. Every message sent to me was passed through software directly controlled by Vanessa.

The cheerful, loving updates I had received overseas had not all come from my wife.

The beautiful photograph of Leah smiling in the sunlit garden had been taken two months earlier. The reassuring message saying she felt strong enough for me to extend the business trip had been typed by Vanessa. When I specifically requested a video call, they always claimed Leah had just fallen asleep.

“I thought you were avoiding me,” I admitted, the shame burning my throat.

“At first, I thought you were just too busy to notice,” Leah replied, not looking at me.

Then the abuse escalated. Her credit cards stopped working. The estate driver refused to take her to prenatal appointments without Celia’s explicit approval. Any staff members who showed sympathy to Leah were immediately dismissed. Her bedroom was forcibly moved to a cramped, windowless room near the laundry area, under the excuse that sudden construction work affected the master suite.

Celia told her daily that she needed to earn her place in the wealthy household.

“She said I had contributed absolutely nothing to your success,” Leah whispered, tears finally escaping her eyes. “She said you would eventually realize I was nothing but a burden.”

“You are my wife,” I said fiercely.

“I kept saying that,” Leah replied. “And it didn't matter.”
