Chapter 13 - The Federal Raid

|

I reached into my jacket and held up a certified copy of the blue ledger receipt—the original was already safely locked in an FBI evidence vault.

“I know about Dr. Malcolm Pierce,” I said, my voice echoing in the driveway. “I know about the county medical examiner. I know about the massive cash payment made forty-eight hours before my father died.”

Grant looked at our mother, his face suddenly pale.

“What is he talking about, Mom?” Grant demanded, his voice cracking.

Vanessa whispered, “Mom? Did you pay a doctor?”

Celia finally dropped the flawless performance. The cameras were forgotten.

“Your father was going to destroy everything!” she spat, pointing a trembling finger at me.

The police officers on the driveway became deathly still.

“He was going to expose the fraud,” I stated, stepping closer.

“He was going to give away the company! He wanted to repay people who would have ruined us, who would have sent us to the streets!”

“So you changed his heart medication?”

Her defense attorney lunged forward, grabbing her arm. “Do not answer that! Keep your mouth shut!”

But Celia had spent far too many years controlling every room she entered to recognize the exact moment silence became necessary for survival.

“I protected this family!” she screamed, tearing her arm away from the lawyer. “Every single person standing here enjoyed the luxurious life that I preserved! You would have had absolutely nothing without me!”

Before the local police could even process the confession, a convoy of unmarked black SUVs aggressively entered the circular drive, sirens whooping a short, sharp warning.

Federal agents stepped out in tactical gear, carrying thick stacks of warrants related to massive wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. The homicide investigation into my father’s death remained technically separate, but Celia was immediately taken into federal custody for the financial crimes and evidence tampering that were already fully supported by the ledger.

She did not struggle until a female agent placed heavy steel handcuffs on her wrists.

Then, she turned her head and glared at me.

“You will lose absolutely everything because of that woman,” Celia hissed.

I thought of Leah, forced into a torn uniform, bravely copying files to a drive while carrying our child.

“No,” I said, turning my back on her. “I almost lost everything because I kept confusing you with family.”

The agents placed Celia in the back of an SUV. Grant sat down heavily on the curb, burying his head in his hands. Vanessa just stared blankly at the mansion, as though seeing it for the very first time.
