Chapter 11 - The Blueprint of Murder

The tape clicked to the next recording. It captured my father directly confronting Celia in his study.
“You are using our children’s future to justify absolute theft,” my father’s voice rang out, strong and filled with righteous anger.
“I built this family beside you!” Celia yelled back.
“You built an image, Celia! An illusion funded by dirty money!”
“I will not return to poverty because you suddenly developed a pathetic conscience!”
“If anything happens to me, Leonard has copies of everything.”
“You overestimate how much Adrian trusts you. He is my son.”
The recording ended with the loud, violent sound of a heavy oak door slamming shut.
I sat frozen beside Leah’s bed, completely unable to speak. The silence in the hospital room was deafening.
For sixteen years, my mother had meticulously described my father as emotionally weak, financially reckless, and fundamentally unable to handle the immense business pressure. She told me, repeatedly, that his heart failed because he simply could not keep up with the empire she later stepped in to save. She had weaponized my grief to secure my absolute loyalty.
In reality, he had died because he tried to stop the very people who took control after his death.
Leah reached out and placed her heavily bandaged hand firmly over mine.
“You do not have to become what they are in order to stop them,” she said softly.
I looked at her, the rage boiling in my veins.
“I want them to lose absolutely everything,” I said, my voice shaking.
“That feeling is completely understandable.”
“They hurt you. They tortured you. They murdered him.”
“Yes.”
“How am I supposed to remain calm?”
“You do not have to be calm, Adrian,” Leah said, her eyes boring into mine. “You just have to be accurate.”
Her words sliced cleanly through the blind rage.
We immediately called federal investigators through Camille Foster. The blue ledger, the cassette recordings, and the electronic files Leah had stolen were all transferred under strict, documented chain of custody. Marta was immediately placed into witness protection arrangements while authorities evaluated the imminent threat against her life.
Raymond Mercer attempted to flee the country on a chartered private aircraft the very next morning. Federal agents intercepted him on the tarmac before takeoff.
Celia, however, did not run.

She chose an entirely different strategy. She called the local police and reported that I had suffered a violent psychological collapse, kidnapped my pregnant wife, and stolen confidential family property. She confidently presented the forged power of attorney to the precinct captain as definitive proof that she was legally responsible for my medical and financial decisions.
Then, she came to the mansion with Grant, Vanessa, and a media circus.
