Chapter 10: The Gathering of Light
The winter holidays arrived, bringing a blanket of pristine white snow that turned the suburban neighborhood into a picturesque wonderland.
The kitchen at 42 Meridian Lane was a symphony of chaotic, wonderful life. The ovens were radiating heat, roasting a massive turkey, while the stovetop bubbled with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes.
Martha was in her element, wearing a festive red apron, laughing as she directed the culinary traffic.
The house was not empty. Leo had invited six young cadets from the academy—recruits who had no family to go home to for the holidays, boys and girls who would have spent the weekend alone in the cold barracks.
Instead, they were sitting around Martha’s massive dining table, telling jokes, sharing stories, and basking in the absolute, unconditional warmth of a real home.
“Mrs. Vance, this is literally the best stuffing I have ever had in my entire life,” a young, freckle-faced cadet mumbled through a mouthful of food, causing the table to erupt in laughter.
“Eat up, Daniel, you look like a strong wind could blow you over!” Martha beamed, piling another massive scoop onto his plate.

Leo stood in the doorway of the dining room, leaning against the doorframe, watching his mother. She was no longer the terrified, starving woman hiding in the dark. She was the glowing, vibrant matriarch of a found family, surrounded by young protectors who looked at her with absolute respect and adoration.
The darkness was not just defeated; it had been entirely replaced by blinding, brilliant light.
