Chapter 11: The Unbreakable Horizon
Later that evening, after the cadets had returned to the academy with armfuls of leftovers, the house fell into a deep, restorative quiet.
Leo walked out onto the back patio. The night air was freezing, but the sky was remarkably clear, a massive canvas of brilliant, twinkling stars. He held two steaming mugs of hot chocolate, handing one to Martha, who was already sitting on the patio bench wrapped in her thick wool shawl.
“It’s a beautiful night,” Martha whispered, looking up at the sky.
“It is,” Leo agreed, taking a sip of the rich, warm cocoa.
He looked at his mother. The journey they had taken to get to this patio was paved with unimaginable horror, betrayal, and violence. But looking at the peace resting in the lines of her face, Leo knew he would fight that war a thousand times over just to secure this exact moment.
“I used to sit in the dark, Leo,” Martha said softly, her breath pluming in the freezing air. “I used to pray that I would just quietly pass away in my sleep so I wouldn't be a burden to you. So you wouldn't have to worry.”
Leo’s heart ached, but he wrapped his arm tightly around her shoulders, pulling her close.

“You were never a burden, Mom. You were my reason for coming home,” Leo said, his voice an unshakable pillar of truth. “And you will never sit in the dark again. I promise you that.”
Martha rested her head against her son’s strong shoulder. The house behind them was warm, safe, and legally, indisputably theirs. The monsters had been locked away, the trauma had been conquered, and the future stretched out before them—an unbreakable horizon of absolute peace, guarded by the unwavering loyalty of a soldier and the enduring, immortal strength of a mother’s love.
