Back at the house, Julian Abarca sat at the dining room table, spreading out a series of highly classified legal and military documents. Leo and Martha sat across from him, reviewing the paperwork.
“Captain Vance, your petition to the Department of Defense has been formally approved,” Julian announced, a rare, triumphant smile breaking across his professional demeanor.
Leo leaned forward, a deep sense of accomplishment washing over him. “They’re officially adopting it?”
“Yes,” Julian nodded, tapping the top document. “The Vanguard Protocol goes into effect next month. From now on, any active-duty service member who leaves an elderly or disabled dependent in the care of a spouse or third party will be assigned a military family liaison. The liaison is legally mandated to conduct unannounced, in-person welfare checks every thirty days.”
Martha covered her mouth, tears of overwhelming joy spilling over her eyelashes.

“No one will ever be able to hide abuse behind a military spouse ID card again,” Leo said softly, placing his hand over his mother’s. “If a spouse tries to deny entry, the soldier’s commanding officer is notified immediately, and military police are dispatched.”
“You didn’t just save your mother, Leo,” Julian said quietly, packing his briefcase. “You have created an absolute, unbreakable shield for thousands of vulnerable families across the entire armed forces. Vanessa's cruelty inadvertently birthed a system of absolute protection.”
