Chapter 8 - The After-School Incident

Vanessa Sterling was not making idle threats.
Over the next few weeks, she made my life a living nightmare. She constantly visited the estate under the guise of "corporate business," deliberately sabotaging my arrangements. She would change catering orders at the last minute, hide important shipment manifests, and complain loudly to James about the "declining standards" of his home.
I swallowed every insult. I fixed every manufactured crisis. I refused to complain to James, terrified that if I caused drama, he would realize I wasn't worth the trouble.
But one rainy Tuesday afternoon, Vanessa crossed a line I could not ignore.
Chloe’s school had an early dismissal. I brought her to the estate, setting her up at the massive kitchen island with her coloring books and a snack while I reviewed budget spreadsheets.
The kitchen doors pushed open violently.
Vanessa strode in, holding a stack of files, her heels clicking aggressively against the marble floor.
When she saw Chloe sitting at the island, her face twisted in pure revulsion.
“What is this child doing in the primary kitchen?” Vanessa demanded, her voice shrill and echoing. “This is an executive household, not a public daycare!”
Chloe froze, her crayon dropping onto the paper. She shrank back in her chair, terrified by the sudden shouting.
“She is coloring quietly, Ms. Sterling,” I said, standing up immediately, placing myself between Vanessa and my daughter. “She is not in anyone’s way.”
“She is in my way,” Vanessa snapped, stepping closer, pointing a manicured finger at Chloe. “Get your filthy crayons off this counter and get out of my sight, you little brat.”
My blood ran completely cold. The protective rage of a mother eclipsed every ounce of professional restraint I possessed.
“Do not speak to my daughter,” I warned, my voice dropping into a dark, lethal register I didn't know I had.
Vanessa scoffed, raising her hand as if to shove me aside.
“Is there a problem here?”
The deep, booming voice stopped everyone dead in their tracks.
James stood in the doorway. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up, and his dark eyes were burning with a terrifying, unholy fury.
Vanessa instantly dropped her hand, turning to him with a manufactured, innocent smile. “James, darling! I was just explaining to the estate manager that it is highly unprofessional to have street children roaming the primary cooking areas—”
“Get out,” James commanded.

Vanessa blinked, confused. “Excuse me?”
“I said, get out of my house,” James repeated, his voice dangerously quiet as he walked slowly toward her. “Chloe is not a street child. She is a permanent, welcomed resident of this estate. You are the guest, Vanessa. And you have just overstayed your welcome.”
