Chapter 7 - Stepping into the Fire

I signed the contract.
Pride is a luxury for the rich, and survival was the only language I spoke. When a man offers you a lifeline that ensures your daughter will never go hungry again, you do not let go of the rope.
Within a week, my life had completely transformed.
I was given a permanent suite in the mansion. Chloe was enrolled in a prestigious private elementary school nearby, her tuition silently handled by James before I could even ask about the cost.
My job as Executive Estate Manager was surprisingly demanding. James hosted massive corporate dinners, political fundraisers, and international clients at the estate. I coordinated catering, managed the household staff, and organized events that cost more than I had made in a decade.
I threw myself into the work. It was my only way to repay him.
But stepping into the light of his world meant stepping into the crosshairs of the people who surrounded him.
A month after Christmas, I was in the grand foyer, reviewing a floral arrangement for an upcoming gala, when the massive front doors swung open.
A woman walked in like she owned the very air in the room.
She was stunningly beautiful, wearing a tailored white trench coat, her blonde hair falling in perfect, expensive waves. She possessed the kind of aristocratic arrogance that only old money can buy.
“You must be the new charity case,” she said, not bothering with a greeting. Her sharp blue eyes swept over my sensible black slacks and simple blouse with profound, undisguised disgust.
“I am the Estate Manager,” I replied, keeping my voice perfectly level. “Can I help you, ma'am?”
“You can take my coat,” she sneered, tossing the heavy white fabric directly at my face.
I caught it instinctively, my jaw tightening.
“I am Vanessa Sterling,” she announced, walking past me toward the living room. “Chief Operations Officer of Whitmore Hospitality. And James’s future wife. Though he hasn't quite realized it yet.”

She stopped at the archway and looked back at me over her shoulder.
“I don't know what kind of sob story you sold him to get off your knees and stop scrubbing his floors,” Vanessa whispered, her voice dripping with venom. “But do not get comfortable, sweetie. The moment the novelty wears off, I will personally ensure you are thrown right back into the gutter where you belong.”
