Chapter 16 - The Winter Gala

|
Ten months passed, turning a year of survival into a year of profound, absolute joy.
The nightmare of Mark faded into a distant memory, securely blocked by an army of corporate lawyers and a permanent restraining order. Chloe was thriving in her new school, completely obsessed with the massive library in the mansion and the man she now happily called "James."
It was Christmas Eve again. Exactly one year since the night our lives changed.
The estate was a whirlwind of activity, preparing for the annual Whitmore Corporate Winter Gala. As the Executive Estate Manager, I had orchestrated the entire event. The grand ballroom was transformed into a winter wonderland, dripping in crystal icicles, imported white roses, and flickering candlelight.
I stood in the corner of the ballroom, holding a clipboard, wearing my usual professional black pantsuit, ensuring the catering staff was perfectly positioned.
“Excuse me, Ms. Miller.”
I turned around. James’s personal assistant, Laura, stood behind me holding a massive, sleek black garment bag bearing the logo of a Parisian designer.
“Mr. Whitmore requested that you meet him in the master suite immediately,” Laura smiled knowingly, handing me the heavy bag. “He said the event is fully operational and your shift as manager is officially over for the evening.”
I frowned, taking the bag, my heart giving a strange, nervous flutter.
I walked up the grand staircase and pushed open the heavy oak doors of the master suite. The room was empty, but a small, handwritten note rested on the massive king-sized bed.
You’ve managed my entire world perfectly for a year. Tonight, you are not my employee. You are my guest. Put this on and meet me at the top of the stairs.
With trembling hands, I unzipped the garment bag.
I gasped, covering my mouth.
It was the most breathtaking dress I had ever seen. A sweeping, floor-length gown of midnight blue silk, intricately beaded with thousands of tiny silver crystals that caught the light like stars. Beneath the dress sat a pair of flawless silver heels.
An hour later, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was swept up elegantly, framing my face, my makeup subtle but glowing. The exhausted, invisible cleaner from the restaurant was completely gone. I looked like a queen.
I walked out of the suite and approached the top of the grand marble staircase.
James was waiting at the bottom.
He wore a classic, immaculate black tuxedo, looking devastatingly handsome. As I took my first step down the stairs, he looked up.
The conversation in the bustling foyer below slowly died out as the elite guests stopped to stare. But James didn't look at them.
His breath visibly hitched. The absolute, unadulterated awe in his dark eyes as he watched me descend made my heart hammer wildly against my ribs.
When I reached the bottom step, he didn't offer me a polite greeting.

He reached out, took my hand, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my knuckles.
“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen,” James whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.
