Chapter 20 - The Shadow File

|

It was 9:00 p.m. on a quiet Friday evening.

Liam was fast asleep in his bedroom, his stuffed dinosaur tucked securely under his arm. I was sitting in my home study, reviewing a stack of routine logistics reports for the upcoming fiscal quarter.

Suddenly, my private military laptop issued a sharp, unfamiliar double-beep.

I glanced at the screen. A high-priority, end-to-end encrypted file had just bypassed my secondary security firewall, landing directly on my desktop.

The file had no sender name, no IP origin, and no official military routing code.

Printed across the digital preview box in bold, blood-red text was a single classification warning: TOP SECRET / EYES ONLY - BRIGADIER GENERAL CARTER.

I hesitated, my pulse quickening slightly as I tapped the touchpad to decrypt the document.

The file opened.

Inside was a scanned black-and-white photograph taken twenty-five years ago. It showed my late grandfather—the founder of Carter Defense Systems—standing alongside a young, unidentifiable Army officer outside a classified research facility in New Mexico.

Tucked beneath the photograph was a single audio file and a short typed message:

“Congratulations on your star, General Carter. You proved that Richard Sterling and your sister were corrupt. But you still don't know why your family company was created in the first place.

The $500 million contract wasn't a business deal.

It was a payoff to keep Project Midnight buried.

Listen to the audio. Your father wasn't ignorant, Emily. He was protecting you from what’s inside the vault.”

My hand hovered over the play button on the audio file, my heart hammering against my ribs in the sudden, eerie silence of the house.

Outside my window, a dark sedan parked quietly at the curb beneath the streetlamp, its headlights turning off.

I took a deep breath, unlocked my desk drawer, pulled out my service weapon, and pressed PLAY.
