Chapter 18 - The Promotion Ceremony

|

One month later, the Great Hall at Fort Myer was packed with hundreds of military officers, dignitaries, and news crews.

Flags from every branch of the Armed Forces hung from the high rafters. Standing on the raised stage was General Vance, wearing his full service dress uniform.

"Attention to Orders!" the master of ceremonies barked into the microphone.

I stepped onto the stage, wearing my pristine uniform, my heart swelling with a quiet, profound pride.

"The President of the United States has placed special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Emily Carter," General Vance read aloud. "In recognition of these qualities, she is hereby promoted to the rank of Brigadier General."

The entire auditorium stood up, erupting into thunderous applause.

General Vance turned to the side of the stage. "Assisting with the pinning of the rank today is a very special guest."

Liam stepped out onto the stage, accompanied by an Army escort. He was wearing his navy-blue suit, his hair neatly combed, holding a small velvet box containing two bright silver stars.

The crowd let out a collective "Aww" as Liam walked up to me with complete confidence.

I knelt down on one knee so we were eye to eye.

"You ready, big boy?" I whispered softly.

"Ready, Mommy," Liam beamed.

With careful, precise little fingers, my five-year-old son pinned the silver Brigadier General star onto my left shoulder lapel.

He leaned in, whispering into my ear, "I told you that you were important."

I squeezed him tightly in my arms as tears of pure happiness finally spilled down my cheeks.
