Six months later, life had transformed into something truly beautiful.
As a Brigadier General, I took command of the Defense Acquisition Directorate, leading a team of hundreds of dedicated officers and civilians tasked with ensuring transparency, integrity, and safety across all military contracts.
Carter Defense Systems was completely reformed. Under a new, ethical board of directors, the company prioritized employee welfare and rigorous compliance. The $500 million project was progressing smoothly, delivering cutting-edge defensive gear to soldiers overseas.
Madison had moved to a small town in another state, working an entry-level administrative job, forced to live quietly away from the spotlight she had once craved.
My parents remained at a distance. They sent monthly letters and quiet birthday cards for Liam, which I placed in a keepsake box for him when he grew older. They were learning to respect my boundaries, slowly understanding that trust had to be built from scratch.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, I sat on my back patio, sipping tea as I watched Liam kick a soccer ball across the green grass with General Vance, who had become a warm, grandfatherly mentor to my son.
"Pass it here, General!" Liam yelled, laughing as he kicked the ball across the lawn.
"Coming right at you, champ!" Vance called back, kicking it lightly.
