Chapter 9 - The Mask Slips|

I opened my car door and stepped out onto the pavement, meeting Natalie halfway.

She didn't say a word. She just grabbed my arm with a grip so tight it bruised my skin, pulled me toward the front porch, and pushed open the front door.

The smell of fresh lavender air freshener and freshly brewed coffee filled the foyer—a pleasant, welcoming aroma that Vivian always cultivated to make our home feel warm and inviting.

From the kitchen, the soft sound of humming continued.

Natalie and I marched down the hallway, our heavy footsteps echoing against the hardwood floors.

Vivian emerged from the kitchen holding a silver tray with a steaming cup of herbal tea and a small plate of dry toast. She was smiling her picture-perfect, gentle motherly smile.

When her eyes landed on the two of us standing in the hallway—me covered in cold sweat, Natalie looking like an avenging ghost—her smile flickered for a microsecond.

Then, the mask instantly re-sealed itself.

“Oh! Daniel!” Vivian gasped softly, placing a hand over her heart with practiced elegance. “You startled me, sweetie! I thought you were at the office!”

She looked at Natalie, her brows knitting together in an expression of deep, exaggerated concern.

“Natalie? What are you doing here? Is everything alright? You look so... unhinged, dear.”

I stepped forward, putting my body between my mother and the stairs leading up to Emma.

“Get away from my wife,” I said.

My voice didn't sound like mine. It was hollow, dark, and vibrating with absolute hatred.

Vivian blinked, her wide eyes filling with instant, glittering tears. Her lower lip began to tremble in a masterclass performance of innocent shock.

“Daniel... what are you saying?” she whimpered, taking a fragile step backward. “I’m upstairs taking care of your son! Poor Emma had a terrible incident... she dropped her pain medication all over the floor and became completely hysterical! I was only trying to protect Oliver from—”

I didn't let her finish.

I raised my phone, turned the screen toward her face, and hit play on the three-minute cellular backup footage.
