Chapter 17 - The Reckoning|

My father stared down at the photograph in his shaking hands.
The moment his eyes landed on Sarah Miller’s face, a terrible, guttural gasp escaped his throat. He dropped his briefcase onto the grass, his knees buckling slightly as thirty years of buried grief and suppressed memories came roaring back to the surface.
“Sarah...” he whispered, his eyes welling with thick, heavy tears. “Where... where did you get this?”
“I found it in Vivian’s safe ten years ago,” Natalie explained, her voice steady and relentless. “Along with the forged adoption papers, the stolen medical records, and the letters from Mom’s family that Vivian intercepted and hid from you.”
Arthur looked up at the police car, then at me, his face a tragic mask of utter confusion and heartbreak.
“Dad,” I said, stepping down to stand beside my sister. “Vivian poisoned this family. She abused Natalie for years while you were away. She tried to destroy Emma today. She scattered Emma’s medicine and forced her to crawl for Oliver on video.”
I handed my phone to my father.
He stood in the middle of the front lawn, in full view of our neighbors, and watched the three-minute recording.
As he watched his second wife torment his daughter-in-law and hold his newborn grandson like a hostage, Arthur’s face transformed from heartbreak into a deep, terrifying rage that I had never seen in him before.
He turned slowly toward the police cruiser, walked up to the open rear window where Vivian sat huddled against the leather seat, and leaned in.
“Arthur...” Vivian whimpered through the glass, trying to summon a pathetic, tearful smile. “Arthur, darling, please... they’re lying to you... they set me up...”
Arthur looked at her with an absolute, freezing disgust that shattered her last remaining shred of hope.

“Don't you ever say my name again,” Arthur whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity. “I am hiring the best legal team in this state. You will spend the rest of your miserable life behind bars, and if you ever step within a hundred miles of my children or my grandson again, I will personally ruin you.”
He turned his back on her, leaving her screaming his name into the dark interior of the police car as it pulled away down the street.
