Chapter 7 - The Whispered Secret|
On the small digital screen, I watched Emma’s lips move as she whispered back to my mother.
Though the audio was faint, the camera's high-definition clarity allowed me to read her lips perfectly.
Emma whispered: “You said you’d never tell him.”
My breath hitched in my throat.
Vivian smiled—a slow, triumphant, chilling smile that curved her red lips like a predator cornering its prey. She patted Emma’s cheek twice with terrifying gentleness, leaned back, and straightened her floral apron.
Tell me what?
The question burned through my mind like acid. What leverage did my mother have over my wife? What dark secret had Vivian uncovered or manufactured to keep Emma trapped in absolute, terrified submission?
“Daniel?” Natalie’s voice called out through the car speakers. “What’s happening? What are they doing?”
“I have to go,” I growled, my hands flying to the gear shift. “Something else is happening. Emma... Emma knows something.”
“Don't you dare go in there alone!” Natalie snapped firmly. “I’m five minutes away from your neighborhood! I pulled off the highway the second I saw the video!”
“I can't wait five minutes, Nat! She’s hurting her!”
“Listen to me!” Natalie shouted over the line. “If you go in there raging, Vivian will use her master trick! She will spin it, she will call the police, she will claim you’re being abusive! Wait till I pull up! I have something in my car that I’ve kept for ten years!”
“What do you have?”
“Just drive to the house and park around the corner!” Natalie commanded. “I’m turning onto your street right now!”
I slammed the car into drive, hit the accelerator, and sent the vehicle speeding down the suburban avenue toward my house.
