Chapter 12 - The Secret Meeting|

"Where?" Mateo asked, his voice barely a whisper. He knew he shouldn't negotiate with her, but the thought of Mariana losing the foundation—losing everything she had built for kids like him—was unbearable.
"The old diner on 4th Street," Elena replied quickly, sensing his hesitation. "Tomorrow at noon. Come alone. If you do this, I will call Vance off Mariana."
The line went dead. Mateo stared at the screen, a heavy knot forming in his stomach. He was stepping into a trap, but he had to protect his real family.
The next day, Mateo slipped out of the community center while Mariana was buried in an emergency meeting with her lawyers. The walk to the diner felt like marching to his own execution. The bell above the door jingled as he walked in, scanning the worn leather booths.
She was sitting in the back corner.
Elena looked older than the photo, her face lined with grief and exhaustion, but she was impeccably dressed in a tailored coat and expensive jewelry. When she saw him, she gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.
"You're so big," she whispered as he slid into the booth across from her.
"I have a lot of growing up to do," Mateo said coldly. "Call off your lawyer."
"It's not that simple, baby—"
"Don't call me that," Mateo snapped. "You left me with a monster. You let him chain me like a dog. You don't get to pretend you care now."
Tears streamed down Elena’s face. "I didn't know! When I woke up from the coma, my father told me you had died in the crash with my sister. He forged a death certificate to protect our family's reputation because your father was a criminal. I swear to you, Mateo, I didn't know you were alive until a month ago."
Mateo froze. He looked deep into her eyes, searching for the lie, but all he saw was raw, unfiltered agony.
"Why should I believe you?" he asked, his voice breaking.
"Because of this," she said, sliding a thick envelope across the table. "These are my medical records, the forged death certificate, and a letter my father wrote on his deathbed confessing to the whole thing. I didn't abandon you, Mateo. I was robbed of you."

Before Mateo could process the documents, the diner door burst open.
Arthur Vance stormed in, his eyes blazing with fury. "I told you not to contact him directly, Elena! You're ruining the strategy!"
