Chapter 11 - The Buried Truth

|

The shrill wail of police sirens cut through the night, echoing down the empty street toward the foundation. Mariana had woken up, seen the security lights, and immediately triggered the silent alarm.

Elias cursed under his breath, looking toward the flashing red and blue lights approaching the front gates.

"This isn't over," Elias spat, grabbing his shovel.

"Don't move!" Mateo yelled, stepping forward with the bat raised high.

But Elias was fast. He swung the heavy metal spade, knocking the wooden bat out of Mateo’s hands with a bone-jarring crack. Before Mateo could recover, Elias vaulted over the low stone wall at the back of the property and disappeared into the dense woods just as two police cruisers skidded onto the driveway.

Mariana ran out the back door in her robe, a flashlight in her trembling hand.

"Mateo! Are you hurt?" she cried, pulling him into a desperate hug.

"I'm fine," Mateo breathed heavily, his heart racing. "He ran into the woods."

Two officers jogged around the corner of the house, guns drawn.

"Sweep the perimeter!" the older officer barked into his radio.

Mariana held Mateo's face in her hands, checking him for injuries.

"What was he doing?" Mariana asked, looking at the freshly overturned earth.

"He was digging," Mateo said, pointing to the messy crater where the old doghouse used to stand. "He said there was something buried here."

When the sun finally rose, casting a golden light over the garden, the police had left with nothing but an empty report. Mateo stood over the hole Elias had started.

"We need to fill it back in," Mariana said quietly, handing him a shovel.

"No," Mateo said, his jaw set with determination.

"What do you mean?"

"He was willing to risk going back to prison for whatever is down there. I need to know what it is."

Without waiting for her to argue, Mateo jumped into the shallow hole and began to dig. He dug for twenty minutes, sweat pouring down his face, until the metal blade of his shovel hit something hard with a loud, metallic clank.

Mariana gasped, covering her mouth.

Mateo dropped to his knees, brushing away the damp soil with his bare hands. Buried deep in the earth was a rusted, heavy iron lockbox.
