Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past|

Mateo snatched the photograph from Mariana’s trembling fingers. He stared at the image, trying to make sense of it. It was a picture of a younger woman, her hair wild and her eyes dark, holding a tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
"Is this..." Mateo started, his voice cracking. "Is this her?"
"Your biological mother, Elena," Mariana whispered, bracing herself against the kitchen counter. "But it's impossible. The police reports, the court documents... they all stated she died in a car accident when you were just a year old."
"My dad told me she abandoned us," Mateo said, a sudden rush of anger flushing his cheeks. "He said she didn't want me. He used that as an excuse for... for everything he did to me."
"He lied to you about everything else, Mateo. Why wouldn't he lie about this?" Mariana said, pacing the floor. "But if she's alive, why wait until now? Why wait until you're finally safe, until those monsters are locked up?"
Before Mateo could answer, the security alarm system on the wall beeped loudly. A red light flashed above the keypad, indicating motion at the back entrance of the property—near the old treehouse.
"Call 911," Mariana ordered, grabbing the heavy iron fireplace poker from the living room.
"Mariana, don't go out there!" Mateo pleaded, pulling out his cell phone and dialing the numbers with shaking hands.
"I have to lock the deadbolt on the sunroom door. Just stay on the line with dispatch!"
Mariana crept down the hallway, every shadow playing tricks on her mind. She reached the sunroom and peered through the glass. The motion sensor light had flicked on, illuminating the backyard in a harsh, clinical white.
Standing right in the center of the lawn, staring directly at the house, was a man. He didn't look like the figure from the gate. He was tall, dressed in an expensive suit that looked entirely out of place in their neighborhood.
When he saw Mariana looking at him through the glass, he didn't run. Instead, he smiled—a cold, terrifying smile—and slowly raised a hand, pressing a piece of paper against the glass.
Mariana squinted to read the bold, black marker text written on it.

The man stepped back into the shadows just as the distant wail of police sirens pierced the night air.
