Chapter 20 - The Speech|

Lily gripped the edges of the podium, her eyes sweeping across the captivated audience.
"For a long time, I believed that staying safe meant hiding," she continued. "I thought if I was quiet enough, invisible enough, the bad things wouldn't reach me. But silence is exactly what abusers rely on. Silence is the currency that buys them their freedom while their victims remain trapped."
I felt a tear slip down my cheek, but I didn't bother wiping it away. Beside me, Sarah gave an approving, solemn nod.
"My mother, Anna, lost her life because she tried to break that silence," Lily’s voice cracked slightly, but she quickly steadied it. "She tried to warn us. She left behind evidence. And because of her bravery, my father and I were able to escape a deeply toxic and dangerous environment. But we were lucky. We had resources. We had good people willing to listen."
She gestured to the large banner bearing the Initiative's logo behind her.
"Not every child has that luck. That is why this Initiative exists. We cannot expect vulnerable children to fight complex legal battles or escape systemic abuse on their own. They need adults who will stand up, listen, act, and tell the truth—even when the truth is ugly, even when the truth destroys a powerful family's reputation."
A few people in the audience nodded emphatically.
"Safety isn't just about having a locked door to hide behind," Lily concluded, looking directly at the camera in the back of the room. "Safety is about having a voice that is believed. Tonight, by supporting this Initiative, you are giving that voice to hundreds of children. You are telling them that they do not have to be quiet anymore."
She stepped back from the microphone. For a split second, there was total silence. And then, the entire ballroom erupted. People rose from their chairs, a standing ovation that shook the floorboards.
I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the wealthy donors and politicians, making my way to the side of the stage. When Lily walked down the steps, she collapsed into my arms, burying her face in my shoulder.

"You did it," I whispered fiercely into her hair. "Anna is so proud of you. I am so proud of you."
"I told the truth, Dad," she whispered back, tears finally falling. "I told the truth."
