Chapter 18 - The Trust Fund Review|

The day after Thanksgiving, we drove downtown to the gleaming glass tower that housed the independent financial institution acting as co-trustee of Anna's estate. The conference room was cold, smelling of expensive leather and polished mahogany. Mr. Sterling, the senior portfolio manager, sat across from us with a thick binder of financial reports.

"The portfolio has performed exceedingly well this quarter, Lily," Mr. Sterling said, adjusting his glasses. "The diversified investments have yielded a net increase of seven percent. The principal remains entirely secure."

"And the designated transfers to the Initiative?" Lily asked, her posture straight and professional.

"Executed exactly on the first of the month, as you directed," Mr. Sterling confirmed, sliding a receipt of transfer across the table. "You have been incredibly generous, Lily. Most beneficiaries your age choose to increase their personal living allowances."

"My living allowance is more than enough," Lily replied smoothly. "My primary concern is ensuring the emergency housing network remains fully funded for the next decade, regardless of market fluctuations."

I sat quietly beside her, watching my eighteen-year-old daughter negotiate high-level financial strategy with a seasoned banker. She didn't flinch under his gaze. She didn't defer to me for permission to speak.

"As you know," Mr. Sterling continued, "upon your eighteenth birthday, you have the legal right to petition the court to dissolve the co-trustee oversight entirely. You could take full control of the assets today."

Lily glanced at me, then looked back at the banker.

"I am aware," she said. "But I prefer to maintain the current structure for now. I am a full-time college student. I do not have the time to oversee day-to-day market analytics, and I value the institutional oversight. Protection matters more than my pride."

Mr. Sterling looked genuinely impressed. "That is an exceptionally mature perspective, Lily."

"It is a necessary one," she corrected him.

After the meeting, as we walked to the elevator, I bumped my shoulder gently against hers.

"You handled him perfectly," I said.

"He wanted to see if I was a naive teenager he could talk down to," Lily smirked. "Grandma Evelyn used to talk down to people like that. I learned how to recognize it. And I learned how to shut it down."
