Chapter 15 - The Initiative's Expansion|
A week later, Rebecca visited the house. She arrived with a thick portfolio of financial documents and a vibrant energy that instantly brightened the quiet living room. Since taking over the operational side of the Anna Hart Child Safety Initiative, Rebecca had transformed it from a local support fund into a formidable state-wide program.
"We have successfully secured the new grants," Rebecca announced, spreading glossy brochures across the coffee table.
"That is incredible news," I said, looking at the professional materials. "Anna would be amazed at how far this has grown."
"It is growing because people need it. The emergency housing network is fully operational. We have five safe houses now, all fully funded through the trust’s charitable arm and matched by the hospital board."
"How much of this does Lily know about?"
"She knows the broad strokes," Rebecca replied, tapping a pen against her notebook. "I had a video call with her on Tuesday. She officially authorized the transfer of the annual income percentage. She is surprisingly sharp with the financial language."
"She learns quickly. She wants to ensure the institution co-trustees cannot mismanage a single cent."
"She also confirmed that she wants to speak at the Gala next fall," Rebecca added, her tone softening. "Are you sure she is ready for that kind of public exposure? The press will be there. The history with Evelyn might be dragged back into the spotlight."
"I asked her the same thing," I admitted, leaning back in my chair.
"And?"
"And she told me that Grandma Evelyn wanted everything kept in the dark, and that speaking out is the exact opposite. She wants to own her story before someone else tries to write it for her."
Rebecca smiled, a look of profound respect crossing her face.
"She really is something else. When I first met her, she was a terrified little girl hiding behind you."
"She still has moments of fear," I said. "But she knows what to do with the fear now."
"Well, the Initiative is preparing a dedicated security team for the event anyway. We won't take any chances."

Rebecca nodded in agreement, packing her brochures back into the portfolio. The Initiative was no longer just a memorial for Anna; it had become a living, breathing shield for hundreds of children. And Lily was quietly preparing to be the one holding that shield.
