Chapter 25 - AVA ASKS FOR THE WHOLE STORY

Ava was twelve when she asked to hear the security recording.
Harper said no.
Ava asked again at thirteen.
Harper said not yet.
At fourteen, she wrote a school paper about family mythology without naming the family.
Harper read it.
Then agreed.
They sat in the living room.
Chloe joined by video from another state.
Peyton was not present.
Neither were Evelyn or Richard.
The recording began.
Richard’s voice.
Pay your sister’s rent or get out.
The slap.
Ava flinched.
Even knowing.
Even prepared.
Then Evelyn.
This family is done carrying you.
Peyton.
It’s only three months of rent.
Harper’s voice.
You still think this is your house.
The lock.
Remove every unauthorized occupant.
The file ended.
Ava stared at the screen.
“I was crying.”
“Yes.”
“Aunt Peyton was holding me.”
“Yes.”
“Did she hurt me?”
“Not physically.”
“Did she give me back?”
“To Chloe.”
Ava looked toward her sister on the screen.
Chloe smiled sadly.
“You got quiet with me.”
Ava’s eyes filled.
“Why did Grandpa hit you?”
“Because he believed fear would make me obey.”
“Did it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Were you scared?”
“Yes.”
“But you sounded calm.”
“Calm is not the absence of fear.”
Ava sat with that.
Then asked:
“Why did you keep the recording?”
“Because memory changes under pressure.”
“Do you listen to it?”
“Rarely.”
“Do you hate him?”
Harper looked at her daughter.
“No.”
“Do you love him?”
“Not in a way that gives him access.”
Ava leaned back.
“Adults make love complicated.”
“Adults often confuse it with permission.”
The next question was harder.
“Do you love Aunt Peyton?”
“Yes.”
“Do you trust her?”
“In some ways.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“In some ways.”
Ava frowned.
“That sounds annoying.”
“It is.”
Chloe laughed through the screen.
Ava eventually asked to meet Richard.
Harper’s whole body resisted.
But the choice belonged increasingly to Ava.
They arranged a supervised video call.
Richard appeared older than the photograph Ava knew.
He cried when he saw her.
Ava did not.
“Why did you tell Mom to pay rent?” she asked.
Richard looked down.
“Because I thought Peyton’s needs were Harper’s responsibility.”
“Why?”
“Because Harper always solved things.”
“That doesn’t make it her job.”
“No.”
“Why did you hit her?”
Richard’s breathing changed.
“Because she stopped letting me control the room.”
Ava nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
Richard looked confused.
“Okay?”
“That’s all I wanted to know.”
She ended the call.
Harper stared.
Ava shrugged.
“He told the truth.”
“Do you want another call?”
“No.”
Simple.
May you like
Not cruel.
Complete.
