Chapter 24 - CHLOE’S FIRST CASE

Chloe became a lawyer.

Madeline pretended this was not entirely her fault.

Harper knew better.

Chloe studied financial exploitation, disability rights, and minor trust protection.

Her first major case involved a seventeen-year-old boy named Eli whose mother had used his disability settlement to pay family debts.

The details were different.

The language was not.

Family money.

Temporary.

Shared need.

Ungrateful child.

Chloe sat with Eli in a small legal-aid office.

Harper waited outside because Chloe had invited her to observe the hearing, not the client meeting.

Afterward, Chloe emerged carrying a folder exactly the way Madeline did.

“You look terrifying,” Harper said.

“Thank you.”

At court, opposing counsel argued Eli’s mother had used funds to preserve the family home.

Chloe stood.

“The home was preserved by consuming the child’s future.”

Harper’s chest tightened.

The judge ordered an accounting.

Emergency protection.

Independent trustee.

Eli remained housed.

His money stopped disappearing.

Outside the courthouse, he hugged Chloe.

She froze.

Then carefully hugged him back.

Harper saw the thirteen-year-old on the marble stairs inside her adult daughter.

Still pale.

Still watching.

But no longer powerless.

That evening, Chloe visited the Yes Door Trust.

The marble foyer had been repainted in warmer colors.

The island remained.

The smart lock remained.

She stood beside the place where Harper’s wheelchair had struck.

A young girl approached.

“Are you the lawyer?”

“One of them.”

“My mom says lawyers keep papers safe.”

“Sometimes.”

“Do papers stop bad people?”

“Not alone.”

“What does?”

Chloe looked toward Harper.

“People who believe the papers. People who believe you before the papers. Locks. Judges. Friends. Plans.”

The girl nodded.

“Snacks?”

“Also snacks.”

The girl led her toward the kitchen.

Harper remained by the island.

Madeline joined her.

“She did well.”

“Yes.”

“You are crying.”

“No.”

“Procedurally false.”

Harper wiped her cheek.

“What happens when children become the people we needed?”

Madeline looked toward Chloe.

“They still need mothers.”

May you like

Harper smiled.

Then followed her daughter into the kitchen.
