Chapter 19 - The Architect's Shadow

|
By nightfall, Hale had relocated me to a secure FBI safehouse on the outskirts of Denver. It was a sterile, windowless concrete bunker masquerading as a suburban home.
Vivian stayed with me, refusing to leave my side.
At 9:00 PM, Hale walked into the safehouse kitchen with a thick stack of fresh printouts.
"You were right," Hale said, throwing the papers on the counter. "They aren't Bennetts."
He pointed to the first page. "Grant Bennett is actually Arthur Vance. Did ten years in federal prison for racketeering and wire fraud in the nineties. Diane is a known confidence trickster named Martha Higgins."
"And Brooke?" I asked.
"Runaway from Seattle. They recruited her four years ago to play the innocent sister. She was a prop."
"And my husband?"
Hale hesitated, sliding a rap sheet toward me. The mugshot was a decade old, but the charming smile was exactly the same.
"His real name is Julian Thorne. He's a grifter. Smooth, highly intelligent, and absolutely ruthless. He's been connected to three suspicious deaths, including Natalie Pierce, but he's never been convicted. Vance and Higgins acted as his 'parents' to give him the illusion of stability."
I stared at the face of the man I had married. The man who had kissed my pregnant belly just three days ago. None of it was real. Every touch, every word, every I love you, was a calculated move to get closer to my bank accounts.
"Have you found the man on the phone?" Vivian asked. "The Architect?"
"No," Hale admitted, frustrated. "The burner phone trace bounced through servers in Russia, Dubai, and the Caymans before dying. Whoever he is, he's well-funded and deeply entrenched. He's the one who set up the Northstar Data Systems shell company."
"So what happens now?" I asked, rubbing my stomach. The baby kicked, a strong, defiant movement.
"Ryan, Grant, and Diane are going away for a very long time," Hale promised. "We have them dead to rights on the financial fraud, the assault, and the conspiracy to commit murder. You are safe, Claire. You survived."
I nodded slowly. I had survived. I had my money locked down, my child was safe, and the monsters who had invaded my life were in cages.
May you like
But as I looked at the dark windows of the safehouse, I couldn't shake the feeling of the ice in the Architect's voice.
Clean up this mess immediately.
