Chapter 16 - The Target Profile

|
My hands shook as I sifted through the dossier of my own life. Ryan had always told me our meeting was destiny. A charity gala, a bumped shoulder, a spilled glass of red wine, and a charming apology. He even joked about it in his wedding vows.
It was all a script. He had staged the spill. He had staged our entire romance.
At the bottom of the envelope was a piece of lined notebook paper. The handwriting wasn't Ryan's. It was jagged, heavy-handed, and aggressive. It was Grant's.
At the top, it read: TARGET PROFILE - CLAIRE DAWSON.
Below that was a bulleted list:
Single. Emotionally isolated.
No living parents or siblings to interfere.
High executive income.
Significant pre-IPO equity in tech sector.
Desperate for family connection.
Tears of pure humiliation stung my eyes. Desperate for family connection. They had identified my deepest vulnerability—my loneliness after losing my parents—and weaponized it. They hadn't welcomed me into their family. They had built a cage shaped like one.
"Look at this," Hale said, his tone suddenly urgent.
He pulled another sheet of paper from the back of the envelope. It was a ledger of sorts. A list of names.
Five women's names were written in a column.
My name was at the bottom, heavily circled in red ink. Beside it, Grant had written: Ryan says he can handle her.
But it was the four names above mine that made Hale freeze. Three of the names were crossed out with a single black line.
Sarah Jenkins.
Elena Rostova.
Natalie Pierce.
"Who are they?" Vivian asked.
Hale pulled out his phone, instantly taking a photo of the list and sending it to his team at the field office.
"Give me five minutes," Hale said, stepping out into the hallway.
I stared at the name directly above mine. Natalie Pierce. The ink crossing her name out looked older, faded into the paper.
When Hale walked back into the room, his face was like stone. The federal agent who had seen it all looked genuinely rattled.
"They ran the names," Hale said, looking directly at me. "Sarah Jenkins and Elena Rostova both filed police reports against Ryan Bennett six and seven years ago. Fraud, grand larceny, and coercive control. Both cases were dropped due to lack of evidence, and both women filed for bankruptcy shortly after."

"And Natalie Pierce?" I asked, my chest tightening.
"Natalie Pierce dated Ryan for eight months," Hale said quietly. "She died six years ago."
