Chapter 18 - The Phantom Family

The line went dead with a sharp click.
The echo of the man's words hung in the air, paralyzing all of us.
If Claire finds out that Ryan isn't your son.
I looked at Vivian, whose mouth was slightly open in shock. I looked at Hale, who was already bagging the burner phone like it was an unexploded bomb.
"Ryan isn't Grant's son," I repeated, the words feeling foreign on my tongue. "What does that mean? He's adopted?"
Hale shook his head, his investigative mind shifting into overdrive. "No. If he was just adopted, it wouldn't be a secret worth killing over. The caller said 'the operation goes down.'"
"The Bennett family," Vivian realized, stepping forward, her eyes wide. "Claire, think about it. Diane notarizing the fake documents. Grant acting as the aggressive patriarch to keep you intimidated. Ryan playing the loving, charming husband. Brooke acting as the dependent, harmless sister."
"They're actors," I whispered, the horrifying truth dawning on me.
"They're a cell," Hale corrected. "A fabricated family unit. A criminal syndicate constructs these fake family dynamics to bypass the natural defenses of isolated, wealthy targets. You wouldn't trust a lone wolf who bumped into you at a gala. But a man with a mother, a father, and a little sister? A man who invites you to Sunday dinners? You let your guard down."
My mind raced back through the last three years. The lack of childhood photos in Grant and Diane's condo. The way Brooke never really looked like Ryan. The strange, almost business-like way Grant spoke to Ryan when they thought I couldn't hear them.
"They aren't a family," I said, feeling a hysterical laugh bubble up in my throat. "They're a corporation. And I was just the latest acquisition."
"We need to run DNA," Hale said, pulling out his radio. "I want full biometrics on Grant, Diane, Ryan, and Brooke. Run them against Interpol and the federal database. I bet you anything 'Bennett' is just the name they picked for this specific job."
"What about the man on the phone?" I asked. "The one giving the orders?"
"That's the architect," Hale said darkly. "And if he knows Grant failed to 'handle' you last night, he knows the operation is blown. Which means they are going to burn the evidence."

"What evidence?" Vivian asked.
Hale looked directly at me. "You. You are the only living witness who can tie the corporate fraud, the forgery, and the attempted murder of Natalie Pierce together."
