Chapter 3 - The Ghost Wife

|
I barely slept that night. As a forensic auditor for a private healthcare network, my whole life was built on verifying facts and uncovering anomalies.
At seven o'clock the next morning, I was sitting in my car outside the San Diego County Clerk's office.
I ran the public record search.
There was no record of divorce. No record of annulment. Austin David Wellman and Kathleen Marie Hilliard were still legally husband and wife in the eyes of the state of California.
By noon, using a basic public directory trace, I tracked Kathleen down to a small bakery in Oceanside where she worked as a decorator.
I walked inside, the bell above the door chiming softly. A woman in her early thirties with tired eyes and flour-dusted hands greeted me from behind the counter.
"Can I help you?" she asked gently.
"Are you Kathleen Hilliard?"
She paused, wiping her hands on her apron. "Yes. Do I know you?"
"My name is Monica Wellman. I'm Austin's sister."
Kathleen’s face drained of color. She backed up against the metal kitchen counter, her chest heaving.
"Did something happen to him?" she whispered. "Is he hurt?"
"No," I replied, my stomach churning. "Kathleen... Austin is getting married in three months to another woman."
Silence fell over the bakery. Kathleen stared at me, her lips trembling in shock.
"Married?" she breathed out. "How? He told me he was working on an overseas contract in Dubai... he sends me twelve hundred dollars a month for rent... I thought he was still my husband!"
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
"He left three years ago, Monica," Kathleen sobbed. "He said if I tried to file for divorce while he was away, it would ruin his tax status and we'd go bankrupt. He kept telling me to wait!"
I took Kathleen's trembling hands in mine.
"He lied to you," I said firmly. "And he's lying to her."
That afternoon, Kathleen called Naomi Millican directly.

By midnight, the wedding was officially canceled. Naomi’s father threatened to ruin Austin socially across the city.
And my mother's golden world came crashing down.
