Chapter 11 - The Break-In

|
Three days later, I was finally discharged from the hospital.
I returned to my small, second-floor apartment in North Park. My living room was set up with a medical bed, a walker, and my crutches. My neighbor, a sweet elderly woman named Mrs. Gable, had filled my fridge with groceries and promised to check on me.
At eleven o'clock that night, I sat in my wheelchair in the dark living room, reviewing the hospital network's internal executive chart on my laptop.
Dr. Richard Hayes had been the Chief Medical Officer for San Diego Health Network for over fifteen years.
Suddenly, a soft sound echoed from my front hallway.
Click.
Click.
It was the sound of metal scraping inside the deadbolt lock of my front door.
My body went completely rigid with terror.
I grabbed my heavy wooden crutch resting against the side of my wheelchair, holding it like a baseball bat.
The front door slowly creaked open.
A dark figure wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a surgical mask slipped silently into my entryway.
In the faint moonlight filtering through the blinds, I saw the glint of a heavy metal pry bar in the intruder's gloved hand.
The intruder moved quickly toward my desk, reaching out to grab my work laptop and my external hard drives.
"Get out of my house!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.
The intruder whipped around, startled, and lunged toward my wheelchair with the pry bar raised.
I didn't hesitate. With all the force remaining in my upper body, I swung the heavy wooden crutch straight into the intruder's face.
CRACK!
The impact shattered the intruder's mask, knocking them backward onto the hardwood floor with a heavy groan.
From down the hall, Mrs. Gable began pounding on her wall, screaming, "I'm calling the police!"
The intruder scrambled back onto their feet, dropping their pry bar and a cell phone on the rug, before turning around and sprinting out the open door into the dark hallway.
Shaking violently, I rolled my wheelchair forward, picked up the intruder's dropped phone from the floor, and looked at the illuminated lock screen.
A text notification flashed on the screen:
