Chapter 15 - Amanda's House Raid

|

While Dr. Hayes was being processed at the federal courthouse, SWAT teams and state investigators executed a comprehensive raid on my mother's home in La Jolla.

Detective Vance invited me to observe from the police command vehicle parked across the street.

My mother was dragged out of the front door in handcuffs, screaming obscenities at the officers as neighbors gathered on their lawns to watch.

"You can't do this to me!" Amanda shrieked, her silk blouse torn and her hair a wild mess. "I am Amanda Wellman! My son is going to sue every single one of you!"

She caught sight of me sitting inside the police SUV.

She threw her body against the car window, her face twisted in demonic fury.

"You traitress!" she screamed, spit flying against the glass. "You ruined your brother! You ruined your family! I wish I had thrown you in the trash the day you were born!"

"Take her away," Detective Vance commanded.

The officers slammed her into the back of a squad car and drove off.

Inside the house, forensic investigators spent six hours tearing apart the property.

Under the floorboards of the garage—the very floor where Austin had shattered my knee with the tire iron three weeks prior—investigators discovered a hidden steel floor safe.

Inside the safe, officers recovered:

Eight hundred thousand dollars in stacked hundred-dollar bills.

Three forged passports under different names for Austin, Amanda, and Dr. Hayes.

A heavy steel tire iron stained with my dried blood.

And a black leather notebook labeled System Accounts: 2003-2026.

It was a complete, handwritten ledger of every single bribe, every stolen patient insurance payout, and every illegal wire transfer my mother and Dr. Hayes had executed over the past two decades.

The evidence was absolute. There was no escape for any of them.
