Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Photo

|

I zoomed in on the grainy photograph. The woman in the picture had high cheekbones, dark expressive eyes, and the exact same sharp jawline I saw in the mirror every morning. Yet she was not my mother, Clara Whitaker.

I turned the screen toward my uncle.

The moment Uncle Nate saw the photograph, every ounce of color drained from his face. He gripped the edge of the mahogany desk so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white.

“Uncle Nate?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Who is this woman?”

He stared at the screen, his breathing shallow and uneven.

“Her name... was Wren Hartwell,” Nate whispered.

Marjorie Dane sat up straight, her eyes narrowing instantly. “Wren Hartwell? As in Preston Hartwell’s older sister? The woman who died in a car crash twenty-seven years ago?”

“She didn't die in a car crash,” Uncle Nate revealed, his voice shaking with decades of hidden grief. “She died in a private clinic in upstate New York... giving birth to you.”

The room fell into absolute silence. My mind spun as the foundation of my entire identity shattered into pieces.

“My mother... was Preston’s sister?” I choked out.

“Your adoptive mother, Clara, was my sister and a nurse at that clinic,” Nate explained, tears glistening in his eyes. “Twenty-seven years ago, Wren Hartwell came to us in secret. She was terrified of her brother. She was pregnant, unmarried, and hiding from her family. When she died from birth complications, she begged Clara to take you, hide you, and forge a birth certificate so Preston would think the baby died with her.”

My cell phone buzzed again with a second message from the unknown sender:

She didn't die in a crash. She died giving birth to you. He doesn't want the baby, Emily. He wants the bloodline.

Marjorie pulled her tablet from her leather briefcase, her fingers flying across legal databases. Within seconds, a classified document appeared on her screen.

“The Hartwell Family Trust of 1990,” Marjorie read aloud, her tone growing increasingly grave. “Old Man Hartwell knew Preston was a sociopath. He left eighty percent of the corporate voting shares and a four-billion-dollar trust exclusively to his eldest daughter, Wren—and her direct biological descendants.”

She looked up at me with terrifying realization.

“If Wren died without an heir, the entire fortune defaulted to Preston. But if an heir existed... the moment that heir produces a child of their own, full legal control of the entire four-billion-dollar empire automatically transfers to the new mother.”
