Chapter 12 - The Fall of the King

|

I refused to go quietly.

As Preston pulled me toward the broken doorway, I raised my free hand and dug my fingernails deep into his cheek, dragging them down his face with all the strength I possessed.

Preston grunted in shock as skin tore beneath my nails, warm blood welling up along his jawline. He dropped the syringe, his eyes flaring with sudden, blinding rage.

“You ungrateful bitch!” he snarled, raising the heavy steel butt of his handgun to strike me across the temple.

I pulled my arms up to shield my pregnant stomach, closing my eyes as I braced for the blow.

Suddenly, the night sky outside exploded with brilliant, strobing red and blue lights, flashing through the narrow ventilation shafts near the ceiling.

A booming, amplified voice echoed through a megaphone from the floor above, vibrating the concrete walls:

“DALLAS SWAT! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! THIS BUILDING IS FULLY SURROUNDED!”

Preston froze. The heavy handgun hovered inches from my face.

For the first time in his meticulously orchestrated life, true, unadulterated panic flashed across his sharp features. He looked up at the ceiling, then at the blood dripping onto his silk tie, and finally at the broken doorway.

Heavy, rhythmic combat boots thundered down the wooden basement stairs.

“CLEAR THE CORRIDOR! ENTRY TEAM GO!”

Preston looked down at the gun in his hand, his mind frantically calculating the legal odds in a fraction of a second. The billionaire who controlled judges, mayors, and corporate boards suddenly realized that in a dark basement surrounded by federal tactical operators, his wealth offered zero protection.

He dropped the suppressed pistol. It clattered uselessly against the concrete.

“It’s a misunderstanding!” Preston shouted toward the hallway, instantly adopting a polished, victimized tone. “I came to rescue my wife! We were ambushed!”

Four SWAT officers in heavy Kevlar armor breached the panic room, assault rifles raised and aimed directly at his chest.

“ON THE GROUND! FACE DOWN NOW!”

Preston raised his hands slowly, a calm mask slipping back over his features. “Officers, I am Preston Hartwell. My wife is experiencing a mental health crisis. I am simply—”

Uncle Nate surged up from the floor. He didn't use a weapon. He used twenty-seven years of suppressed grief and anger, slamming his closed fist directly into Preston’s jaw.

The loud crack of breaking bone echoed through the room.

Preston crumpled to the concrete floor, spitting blood and shattered teeth. The SWAT officers didn't even attempt to stop Nate; they roughly pinned Preston to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and securing his wrists with heavy industrial zip-ties.
