Chapter 14 - The Reckoning of Hartwell

|

The legal dominoes fell with terrifying speed over the next two weeks.

Savannah Reed, who had narrowly survived a hitman sent to her apartment the night of the siege, officially turned state’s evidence. In exchange for immunity from attempted murder charges, she handed over six years of encrypted emails, offshore banking ledgers, and audio recordings implicating Preston in corporate espionage and tax evasion.

Jason Mercer pled guilty to conspiracy, providing detailed testimony regarding how Preston’s private security network bribed hospital staff across the state.

A federal judge denied Preston bail, citing him as an extreme flight risk with vast international assets. The man who once bought entire city councils was forced to swap his bespoke suits for an orange jumpsuit in a federal detention center.

One month after the arrest, Marjorie Dane—walking with a polished wooden cane but sharper than ever—entered my hospital room carrying a thick leather binder.

“The board of Hartwell Holdings held an emergency meeting this morning,” Marjorie announced, sitting down beside my bed. “Following the unsealing of the 1990 Bloodline Trust, the corporate board voted unanimously to strip Preston of all executive authority.”

She opened the binder, presenting a series of legal transfer documents.

“Because you are the sole biological descendant of Wren Hartwell, the court has officially verified your identity,” Marjorie explained, pointing to the signature line. “The four-billion-dollar trust, along with sixty-one percent of the voting shares in Hartwell Holdings, is officially yours.”

I looked down at the documents. Three years ago, I was an isolated woman surviving in a golden cage, told daily that I was worthless without my husband’s generosity. Now, the very empire he tried to steal belonged entirely to me.

“What about Preston’s legal defense?” I asked.

“His attorneys are trying to plead diminished capacity,” Marjorie chuckled coldly. “It won't work. The federal prosecutor is pushing for a thirty-year mandatory sentence without the possibility of parole.”

I picked up the gold pen and signed my legal name on the line: Emily Hartwell Whitaker.

I was no longer running from the name. I was claiming it.
