Chapter 19 - The Statement

To my profound surprise, Abigail didn't turn toward the parking garage. She gently stepped past me, squared her shoulders, and walked directly toward the cluster of microphones waiting at the bottom of the courthouse steps.
The reporters, seeing her approach, instantly became silent, raising their recorders and leaning over the police barricades.
"I will only make one statement," Abigail announced. Her voice wasn't booming, but it was remarkably steady. It was the voice of a survivor.
The flashes of the cameras reflected in her bright, clear eyes.
"For a very long time, I believed that powerful people could make the truth disappear," she said, looking directly into the lens of the primary news camera. "I believed that wealth and influence could build a wall so high that no one would ever hear you screaming for help from the other side."
She paused, swallowing hard. The entire plaza was dead silent.
"But they can't," she stated firmly.
Her voice trembled for a fraction of a second, the raw emotion of the last year threatening to break through, but she anchored herself and continued.
"And if there is anyone out there watching this right now, someone who is sitting in the dark, afraid to ask for help because they think the monster they married is too powerful to fight... I want you to know something incredibly important."
She turned her head slightly and looked back up the steps at me. A small, grateful smile touched her lips. Then she turned back to the cameras.
"You don't have to be completely fearless to escape," Abigail said softly. "You just have to be brave enough to make one call."

She didn't take any questions. She didn't launch into a dramatic, vengeful tirade against Nicholas or Patricia. She simply delivered the absolute truth.
She turned away from the press, walked up the steps, linked her arm through mine, and we walked to my car together. It was the most powerful display of dignity I had ever witnessed. She hadn't just defeated the Fergusons; she had completely risen above them.
