Chapter 10 - The Locked Guest House

|

With the heavy wooden door finally closed, isolating the Fergusons in the hallway, the atmosphere in the room shifted. It was still tense, but the suffocating blanket of fear began to lift.

The police officers took out their notepads. The physician stood by with his pen ready. I stood by the head of the bed, my hand resting reassuringly on Abigail's shoulder.

"Take your time, Mrs. Ferguson," the officer said gently. "Tell us exactly what happened today."

Abigail didn't tell the story all at once. The horrifying truth came in broken, fragmented pieces, wedged between fresh tears and long, agonizing moments where she struggled just to catch her breath.

She explained how Nicholas had fundamentally changed the moment they returned from their honeymoon. At first, the Ferguson family had seemed like a dream. Their mansion, their endless charity events, their private country clubs—everything looked incredibly beautiful from the outside looking in.

But behind the heavy iron gates of their estate, Nicholas controlled every single aspect of her existence. He monitored her phone. He restricted her access to their bank accounts. He drove away her college friends. He even dictated what clothing she was allowed to wear in public.

If she ever dared to disagree with him, he verbally degraded her, calling her a spoiled, ungrateful child who brought nothing to the marriage. If she cried and said she wanted to leave, Patricia would corner her, telling her that a divorce would leave her penniless and socially ruined in Charlotte. Gregory simply laughed whenever Nicholas humiliated her at the dinner table.

"And three days ago," Abigail wept, looking down at her bruised arms, "I couldn't take it anymore. I packed a suitcase. I told Nicholas I was leaving and filing for divorce."

The room was dead silent, hanging onto her every word.

"That was when they locked me inside the guest house at the back of the property," she confessed, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

The officers exchanged dark, knowing glances. False imprisonment. The stakes had just escalated from domestic dispute to a major felony.

"Nicholas took my phone away," Abigail continued. "Patricia told the household staff that I was sick and ordered them not to bring me anything or unlock the door. Gregory stood outside my window, laughing, telling me that no judge in the state would ever believe a hysterical woman who accused the great Ferguson family of a crime."

I squeezed my eyes shut, fighting back the rage that threatened to consume me. My daughter had been a prisoner of war on American soil, right in my own backyard.
