Chapter 15 - The Unraveling

The fallout was swift and absolute.
By the next morning, the sun was rising over Charlotte, casting a warm light through the hospital windows. Abigail and I were still in the room. She had finally managed to fall into a deep, exhausted sleep, the sedatives the doctor provided pulling her away from her nightmares. I sat beside her bed in a plastic chair, still wearing my military trousers and undershirt, having draped my jacket over her feet to keep her warm.
At exactly 7:15 AM, there was a sharp knock at the door.
The detective from the previous night entered. Behind him was a sharp-looking woman in a tailored business suit, carrying a heavy briefcase.
"Colonel Gardner," the detective said quietly, careful not to wake Abigail. "This is Assistant District Attorney Elena Brooks. She’s taking over the case personally."
The Ferguson family had expected their connections to shield them. They had expected angry phone calls from powerful friends to sweep this incident under the rug. What they had not expected was that the case would attract the attention of the District Attorney's office for an entirely different reason: it was a slam dunk.
"The recordings are crystal clear, Colonel," ADA Brooks whispered, shaking my hand. "The physical injuries match her statement perfectly. But that's not even the best part."
I raised an eyebrow. "What is?"
"The dam broke," the detective smiled grimly. "Investigators arrived at the Ferguson estate at 2:00 AM with a search warrant for the guest house. When they got there, a senior housekeeper approached them."
My heart leaped. "She talked?"
"She sang," the ADA confirmed. "She witnessed Abigail being dragged into the guest house. She saw Nicholas confiscate her phone. And she told us she has spent the last two years watching the family terrorize and silence anyone who depended on their money. She was terrified, but knowing Abigail finally escaped gave her the courage to speak."
And it didn't stop there. Once word leaked that the police were actively investigating the untouchable Fergusons, a former groundskeeper contacted investigators. Then a former personal assistant.
One by one, the people who had stayed silent in the shadows because they thought the Ferguson name was invincible finally began speaking up. The family had built its entire empire on a foundation of fear. But fear is a remarkably fragile thing. Once one person stops being afraid, others often find the courage they thought they had lost forever.

By noon that day, Nicholas was formally arrested for domestic assault and false imprisonment. Gregory was brought in for questioning regarding witness intimidation. Patricia had barricaded herself in her mansion, refusing to answer calls from the local reporters who were already swarming her gates.
Their perfect, aristocratic image was collapsing in real-time. And they had absolutely no one to blame but themselves.
