Chapter 15 - The Paper Trail

|

I couldn't breathe. The air in my home office felt suddenly toxic, thick with a suspicion so horrific I almost wanted to reject it entirely.

Evelyn hadn't just starved my daughter. Had she killed my wife?

I grabbed my laptop and pulled up my old banking records from seven years ago. It took hours of scrolling, verifying account numbers, and cross-referencing dates, but I found the transaction.

On October 14th, seven years ago, I withdrew four thousand dollars in cash. I remembered handing it to Evelyn in a white envelope, exhausted after a forty-hour work week, begging her to drive to the insurance broker’s office downtown because I had to get back to the job site.

I flipped through the insurance documents in the box.

Notice of Cancellation: October 20th. Reason: Non-payment of premium.

Sarah’s experimental chemotherapy was halted on October 25th. She died four months later.

I slammed my fist onto the desk, tears of pure, blinding rage streaming down my face. She kept the money. Evelyn had kept the insurance money, let the policy lapse, and watched my wife die while playing the supportive, grieving mother-in-law.

I needed proof. Cash was untraceable. But Evelyn was arrogant. She documented everything in her ledgers.

I pulled out my phone and called Robert Vance, my attorney in Austin. It was 2:00 AM, but he answered on the third ring.

"Jason? Is everything okay?"

"Robert, I need you to do something for me," I said, my voice eerily calm. "When the police raided my mother's house, they seized all her financial ledgers, correct?"

"Yes, it's all in the discovery file for the embezzlement trial."

"I need you to look at the ledger entries for October of seven years ago," I commanded. "Look for a cash deposit or a large purchase made by Evelyn exactly around October 14th. Four thousand dollars."

Robert was silent for a moment. "Jason, what are you looking for?"

"I think she murdered Sarah," I whispered into the dark room.
