Chapter 10 - The Golden Child Crumbles

At 4:00 PM, my phone started ringing. It was Greg.
I let it go to voicemail.
It rang again. And again. Finally, on the fourth try, I answered.
"Jason! Man, what the hell is going on?" Greg's voice was frantic, bordering on hysterical. "My business accounts are frozen! The bank says there's a federal hold on all assets connected to Mom's primary checking!"
"Is that right?" I asked casually, staring out the window of my hotel room.
"Did you do this?!" Greg yelled. "Did you report the transfers? Mom is freaking out! She went to the ATM and her card was swallowed!"
"I don't know what you're talking about, Greg," I lied smoothly. "But I'm sure the authorities have a good reason to investigate where a bankrupt contractor suddenly got thirty-two thousand dollars in untaxed income."
There was a dead silence on the other end of the line.
"You knew," Greg whispered, the arrogance completely gone from his voice.
"I know that Maya was eating half a dinner roll a day while you bought a lifted truck," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal register. "I know my daughter lived in a damp basement while you played businessman with her grocery money."
"Jason, please, you don't understand," Greg pleaded, shifting the blame instantly. "Mom told me you were making a fortune in Dallas! She said you sent extra money just for me to help get my business off the ground! I didn't know Maya was suffering!"
"You were over at that house every week for cash, Greg. You saw the basement. You saw the thrift store clothes. You just didn't care."
"Jason, they're going to seize my truck! They're going to ruin me!"
"You ruined yourself," I said coldly. "And if you want to stay out of a federal penitentiary, I suggest you go to the police station and tell them exactly how much of my money our mother handed you."
I hung up.
Maya was sitting on the hotel sofa, listening. "He's going to turn on her, isn't he?"
May you like
"Like a rat on a sinking ship," I confirmed.
My phone buzzed again. This time, it was Evelyn.
