Chapter 13 - The Arrest

|

Two days later, the arrest warrant was officially executed.

Maya and I stood across the street from my childhood home, watching as two police cruisers pulled into the driveway. My lawyer had kept us updated on the District Attorney's progress. Because Evelyn had crossed state lines with the wire fraud and defrauded state welfare programs, the charges were severe.

Evelyn was led out of the front door in handcuffs.

She wasn't wearing her usual pristine makeup or perfectly pressed clothes. She looked older, frailer, and utterly furious. She yelled at the officers, demanding they call her lawyer, demanding they call Greg.

Greg wasn't coming. He had accepted a plea deal the night before, agreeing to testify against our mother in exchange for a suspended sentence and restitution payments. He had turned over every text message, every bank slip, and every email proving Evelyn's intent to defraud me.

As they walked Evelyn to the squad car, she spotted my truck parked across the street. She stopped fighting the officers and stared directly at me.

Even from a distance, I could see the pure, unadulterated hatred in her eyes.

She didn't look at Maya. She only looked at me.

She mouthed a single sentence before the officer pushed her head down into the backseat of the cruiser.

I couldn't make out all the words, but it sent a chill down my spine.

"What did she say?" Maya asked, noticing my sudden tension.

"Nothing," I lied, starting the engine. "Just angry nonsense."

But it wasn't nonsense. I had read her lips perfectly.

You don't know the truth about Sarah.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles popped. Sarah. My late wife. Maya's mother.

Sarah had died of an aggressive cancer when Maya was eight. Her medical bills were the reason we went bankrupt. They were the reason I had to leave Austin in the first place.

Why would Evelyn bring up Sarah now, in the moment of her absolute defeat?

"Dad?" Maya asked softly, breaking my train of thought. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, sweetheart," I forced a smile. "Let's go pack your things. We're flying to Dallas tonight."
