Chapter 8 - Night of the Wolves

“Stay behind me,” Nicholas commanded, his voice dead calm in the pitch blackness.
He pulled a suppressed 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster with practiced ease. The crimson emergency lights clicked on seconds later, casting a bloody red glow across the hallway walls.
“Marco!” Nicholas spoke into his earpiece. “Report.”
Static crackled back. “Boss! They cut the main power line at the estate junction! Four armed hostiles inside the west wing!”
“Secure the nursery corridor!” Nicholas ordered.
He turned to Maria. “Get inside Lucy’s room. Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Marco. Do you hear me?”
Maria grabbed his arm, her eyes wide with fear. “Nicholas, don't go alone!”
“I’m not alone,” Nicholas said, gesturing toward the shadows where three of his elite enforcers materialized, their submachine guns raised. “Protect our girl, Maria.”
Maria nodded frantically, slipped into the nursery, and turned the heavy brass key in the lock.
Nicholas turned back toward the grand staircase, his eyes cold and lethal.
Down below, four men in heavy tactical gear moved silently across the foyer, their weapons raised. Leading them was a tall man with a scarred jaw and sneering lips—Hector Vance.
“Find the girl and the kid!” Vance barked in a low growl to his men. “Kill anyone who gets in the way! Hart promised us Caruso wouldn't be expecting us tonight!”
“Hart lied to you, Hector,” a cold voice boomed from the upper balcony.
Vance snapped his head up.
Before he could raise his weapon, Nicholas fired three precise shots. Three of Vance’s men dropped instantly to the marble floor, blood pooling beneath them.
The remaining thug panicked, spraying wildly toward the staircase, but Marco appeared from the side corridor and cut him down with a brief burst of gunfire.
Within fifteen seconds, the four intruders were dead.

Except Hector Vance.
Vance was on his knees, his gun knocked away, staring in absolute terror up at Nicholas Caruso, who was slowly walking down the grand staircase, his leather shoes stepping over the bloodstains on the floor.
