Chapter 15 - The Ambush at Pier 42

|
The fog at Pier 42 was so thick you couldn't see five feet ahead. The black waters of the Hudson River slapped rhythmically against the rotting wooden pilings.
A fleet of four black SUVs pulled onto the pier, their headlights cutting through the mist.
Dominic Vane stepped out of the lead vehicle—a stooped, silver-haired man in a heavy fur coat, surrounded by twelve heavily armed bodyguards.
In the center of the deserted pier stood Nicholas Caruso, completely alone, wearing a long black trench coat, holding the silver locket loosely in his left hand.
“You came alone, Caruso?” Vane rasped, chuckling darkly. “Ego has always been the downfall of young bosses.”
“I’m not alone, Vane,” Nicholas said evenly. “Look around you.”
High above on the shipping cranes, spotlight beams suddenly cut through the fog, blinding Vane and his men.
Dozens of armed Caruso enforcers appeared on top of the shipping containers lining the pier, their red laser sights targeting every single member of Vane’s crew.
Vane’s eyes widened in realization. “A trap...”
“You brought twenty men to my city, Vane,” Nicholas said, tossing the silver locket onto the wet asphalt between them. “There’s the key you wanted so badly. Take it.”
Vane looked down at the locket, then up at Nicholas. He knew he was completely outmatched.
“Caruso... let’s make a deal,” Vane stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. “We share the contents of the vault! Half for you, half for me!”
“I don't deal with parasites who shoot at my home while my daughter is sleeping,” Nicholas said softly.
He raised his right hand and dropped it.
The pier exploded with gunfire.
Within thirty seconds, Dominic Vane’s empire was brought to an end.

Nicholas walked forward, picking up the unblemished silver locket from the ground, wiping a speck of dust off its shiny surface, and slipping it safely back into his pocket.
“Clean it up, Marco,” Nicholas said, turning toward his car. “I have a wedding to plan.”
