Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Promise

The heavy front doors swung open, and Don Vincente Moretti stepped into the grand foyer of the Caruso mansion.
His sharp blue eyes swept over the polished floor, the high ceilings, and finally settled on Nicholas Caruso, who stood at the foot of the stairs like a immovable sentinel.
“Nicholas Caruso,” Vincente spoke, his voice rich with an accented Italian authority. “You have built a fine empire here.”
“You’re trespassing, Moretti,” Nicholas said evenly, his hand resting casually near his holster. “State your business and leave.”
Vincente chuckled softly, leaning heavily on his gold-topped cane.
“I did not cross the Atlantic to fight you, Nicholas,” Vincente said calmly. “I came to thank you. You protected my granddaughter when she had no one. You destroyed Vance and Vane, who sought to use her as leverage.”
“She is my daughter now,” Nicholas stated firmly. “Legally, and by blood of the heart.”
Vincente nodded slowly, a mixture of respect and sadness in his old eyes.
“I know,” Vincente murmured. “And I do not wish to take her away from a home where she is loved. But you must understand, Nicholas... the Moretti bloodline carries enemies that span across continents. By keeping her, you inherit a war that never ends.”
At that moment, the door at the top of the stairs creaked open.
Little Lucy stood on the landing, wearing her favorite yellow dress, holding her stuffed bear. She looked down at the old man in the foyer, then at Nicholas.
“Daddy?” Lucy called out softly, her tiny voice echoing off the marble walls. “Is everything okay?”
Nicholas turned his head, looking up at his daughter. The cold mask vanished from his face, replaced by absolute warmth and resolve.
He looked back at Don Vincente.
“I fought for this family,” Nicholas said softly, his voice ringing with unbreakable promise. “And I will fight every enemy in this world to keep them safe. If your family wants a war, Vincente... bring it.”
Vincente stared at Nicholas for a long moment, then slowly bowed his head in deep respect.
“Then God help anyone who tries to break this house,” Vincente whispered.
Vincente turned and walked slowly back out into the night, leaving the front doors open to the cool evening wind.

Nicholas walked up the grand staircase, picked up Lucy in his arms, and held her tight against his chest as Maria stepped out from the doorway to join them.
Outside, the distant thunder rolled over the Manhattan skyline—a sign of the storms yet to come, but inside the Caruso mansion, the family stood united, unbroken, and ready for whatever lay ahead.
