Chapter 13 - The Big Offer

|

Charles Miller ignored my comment, pulling an embossed pen and a small leather checkbook from his breast pocket.

“I’m going to make this very simple for you, Catherine,” Charles said coldly. “You will issue a public statement tonight stating that your departure from the Miller family was mutual and amicable. You will shut down this ridiculous live stream, and you will agree not to use our family name in any future press interviews.”

He began writing on the checkbook.

“In exchange,” Charles continued, tearing the check from the book and holding it out toward me, “I will write you a personal check for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Enough to pay off your studio, fund your production run, and move your business to New York where you belong.”

I looked down at the slip of paper. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

It was more money than my parents made in three years. It was enough to secure my financial future instantly, pay off all my debts, and establish my brand without taking on any risky bank loans.

Brad looked at me, a hopeful expression flashing across his face. “Take it, Kate. Please. It fixes everything. We can both move on.”

Vanessa smiled smugly, convinced that every person had a price and that I had finally reached mine.

I reached out my hand and took the check from Charles Miller’s fingers.

The alleyway went quiet as the models and crew backstage watched us through the tent flaps.

I looked at the bold black numbers written on the line: $250,000.00.

Then I looked up into Charles Miller’s cold, arrogant face.

“You really think money buys everything, don't you, Charles?” I asked softly.
