Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Carpet

“I’m dumping you.”
The engagement ring struck Brad Miller high on the cheek, bounced once beneath a crystal chandelier, and vanished into the gray carpet between his polished shoes and Vanessa Carter’s red satin heels.
For three long years, I had trained myself to be calm enough for his high-society family, elegant enough for his inner circle of friends, and grateful enough for every room his wealth opened for me.
It took less than thirty seconds for me to understand that the one thing Brad had never learned to do was stand beside me when the room turned cruel.
The grand hotel ballroom went dead quiet.
Not truly silent, of course. Rooms containing four hundred wealthy socialites are never entirely quiet. Somewhere behind us, ice shifted inside a silver bucket. A waiter steadied a silver tray of champagne flutes. The charity-auction host lowered a microphone he no longer needed. Rain tapped faintly against the hotel’s tall arched windows.
But the people around us stopped pretending not to watch.
Brad touched his cheek. The platinum band had left a small, angry pink mark beneath his right eye. His expression was almost more painful to look at than anger would have been.
He looked embarrassed. Not heartbroken. Not furious. Just deeply embarrassed.
As if I had spilled red wine on his crisp white shirt.

“Kate,” he whispered, his voice dangerously low as he looked around at the staring crowd. “What the hell are you doing? Everyone is looking at us.”
I looked at him, feeling a sudden, breathtaking clarity. “Let them look, Brad.”
