Chapter 38 - |

The wedding planning was a stark, beautiful contrast to the chaotic, stress-filled nightmare that had consumed the estate two years prior. There were no demanding Parisian dress designers screaming at the staff, no outrageously priced floral arrangements shipped in from exotic islands, and absolutely no inflated vendor invoices.

Clara and Daniel planned the entire event in under three months. They chose to hold the ceremony on the estate grounds, under the ancient oak trees in the gardens, right next to the spot where Daniel’s father used to read.

The guest list was capped at fifty people. It included the core foundation board members, Clara’s family, and the domestic staff of the estate.

Rosa was given the day completely off. Daniel explicitly forbade her from organizing the catering or managing the event flow.

"You are a guest of honor, Rosa," Daniel had insisted firmly when she tried to review the seating chart. "You sit, you drink champagne, and you let someone else serve you for once."

On a brilliant Saturday afternoon in early September, the chairs were set out on the manicured lawn. A local string quartet played soft, joyful music as the guests took their seats.

Daniel stood at the altar, wearing a classic, impeccably tailored black suit. He looked incredibly handsome, but more importantly, he looked entirely at peace. He wasn't nervously scanning the crowd or worrying about optics. He was just a man, waiting for the woman he loved.

The music shifted to a sweet, acoustic melody.

Clara emerged from the French doors of the veranda. She wore a simple, elegant silk gown with a soft, flowing train. She wore no veil, just her dark hair pinned back with a few white wildflowers, and Eleanor’s vintage pearl necklace resting against her collarbone.

As she walked down the grassy aisle, Daniel’s breath hitched. He felt a profound, overwhelming wave of gratitude wash over him. He thought of the dark, shameful afternoon in the foyer, the bucket of dirty water, and the crushing betrayal he had almost married.

He had walked through the fire of his own foolishness, and he had somehow been granted this beautiful, perfect second chance. As Clara took his hands at the altar, her eyes shining with absolute, unconditional trust, Daniel knew he would spend the rest of his life making sure she never regretted it.
