Chapter 12 - The Unmasking

Daniel stood exactly halfway down the sweeping staircase. He had returned early from the office, just as I had arranged via a text message sent earlier that morning. He was frozen, gripping the oak banister, staring at the scene below him in absolute shock.
He saw a soaked, hunched cleaning woman. He saw the empty bucket. He saw the muddy footprint. And he saw his beautiful, perfect fiancée laughing at the misery she had just inflicted.
Vanessa recovered almost instantly. Her survival instincts kicked in, and she immediately pivoted to her role as the victim.
She turned quickly toward the stairs, her face arranging itself into a mask of distressed innocence. “Darling! Thank God you're home. This woman is completely unhinged! She was threatening me, and she tried to attack me. I had to throw the water in self-defense!”
Daniel didn't look at her. His eyes remained fixed on me.
Slowly, deliberately, I reached up with my muddy hands. I pulled the thick, cheap glasses off my face and let them drop to the floor. Then, I grabbed the edge of the soaked, synthetic wig and pulled it free, letting my natural, silver hair cascade down my shoulders. I straightened my posture, discarding the hunched servant, and stood tall in my own foyer.
Daniel went ashen pale. He descended two more steps, his voice barely a whisper.
“Mom?”

Vanessa froze. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking like a porcelain doll about to shatter. She looked at my face, then at the gray uniform, and finally realized the catastrophic mistake she had made. The silence in the foyer was deafening, broken only by the sound of dirty water dripping from my clothes onto the marble.
But I was not finished testing her yet.
