Chapter 18 - The Mask Shatters

Martin handed Daniel a stack of photocopies. “She copied your signature onto several vendor approvals, Daniel. Worse, she prepared a post-wedding legal document, forging your initials, naming herself co-director of your private investment company.”
Daniel read the documents silently. When he finally looked up at Vanessa, there was no anger left, only a profound, bottomless grief.
“Was any of it real?” he whispered. “The late nights talking about our future? The trips? Was any of it real to you?”
“Of course it was real, Daniel!” she pleaded, her voice shrill.
“Then why did you research my trust before our second date?”
The grand foyer went completely still. Even the police officer paused.
A perfectly lawful forensic review of a company laptop Vanessa had casually borrowed from Daniel’s home office had revealed her internet search history. It was a roadmap of a gold-digger: detailed searches about Daniel’s inheritance, spousal rights in our state, how to challenge impenetrable trusts, and the legal requirements for medical incapacity proceedings.
Her mask completely shattered. The cornered animal bared its teeth.
“You all think you’re so much better than me!” she screamed, her face red and distorted with rage. “I spent my entire life watching rich, spoiled families waste everything they were given! I was just taking one opportunity for myself! I deserve it more than you do!”
“You weren't taking an opportunity,” Daniel said softly. “You were taking my life apart.”

She pointed a shaking finger at me. “She tested me like I was applying for a maid's job! She is sick!”
“No,” I replied, my voice steady and calm. “I simply watched how you behaved when you thought kindness had no reward, and cruelty had no cost. You failed.”
