Chapter 7

Before I could sever the final zip-tie holding her left wrist, heavy footsteps echoed through the open warehouse door. I placed my body between Emily and the entrance, shielding her as the light from outside was temporarily blocked.

Victor and Laura rushed into the building. Victor’s chest he heave as he tried to catch his breath, his polished demeanor completely destroyed. In his right hand, he gripped a heavy, rust-covered iron crowbar he must have grabbed from the tool shed outside. Laura hovered just behind him, her face a mask of absolute terror, her hands trembling uncontrollably.

"You shouldn’t have opened that door, Daniel," Victor sneered, his voice dropping an octave, trying to project a menace he didn't truly possess. He raised the crowbar slightly, a clear threat.

I didn't say a word to him. I simply reached behind me, found the thick nylon plastic, and cleanly sliced through the final tie. Emily gasped in pain as the blood rushed back into her hands. I helped her stand, keeping my eyes locked on Victor, and gently guided her to stand firmly behind my back.

Then, I took two slow, deliberate steps toward the massive sliding door. Victor tightened his grip on the iron bar, anticipating an attack. He braced himself to swing.

Instead of charging him, I reached out, grabbed the edge of the heavy metal door, and slammed it shut with a deafening crash that shook the walls. Before Victor or Laura could react, I reached up and threw the massive, interior steel drop-bolt across the frame, locking it securely into the floor plate.

I turned back to face them in the dim light of the halogen bulb.

Victor let out a harsh, barking laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. "Are you stupid? You just trapped yourself in here with me."
