Chapter 15

Victor knelt on the cold concrete, his chest heaving, his arm twisted agonizingly behind his back. He gritted his teeth, refusing to look at me, staring instead at the rusted crowbar he had dropped. It started as a faint wail, a high-pitched note carried on the autumn wind. Within seconds, it multiplied, rising in volume and intensity. The unmistakable shrieks of police sirens tore through the rural landscape, echoing off the surrounding hills.

The sirens were not approaching slowly; they were screaming down the highway, engines roaring as they turned onto the long gravel driveway. Outside, the sound of heavy tires skidding to a halt on the gravel gravel was deafening. Car doors slammed in rapid succession. The cavalry hadn't just arrived; they had surrounded the building.
